Alexandra Pacula

<!--StartFragment--> Alexandra Pacula was born in Poland in 1979 and at the age of fourteen moved to The United States together with her family. She is a New York based artist and works in a studio in Brooklyn. She received a BFA degree from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers the State University of New Jersey in 2002 and in 2006 finished a MFA degree at Montclair State University of NJ. Her work has been included in many exhibitions in the US as well as Spain and London.  Alexandra Pacula’s work grows from the least assuming of sources. On a night out on the town one will often snap photos of friends, events and places. Some of these become images for face book pages or are stored and forgotten in the bowels of a computer. Still others, the mistakes are blurry, out of focus and unreadable, these are quickly and unceremoniously deleted usually without a second look. Since leaving school Pacula has been collecting just these images and through the alchemy of painting she has transformed them into true monumental works.  The large scale of the paintings and their technique, a combination of rich impastos and layers of glazing, brings one back to the Baroque and its larger than life canvases filled with motion and theatricality.  This is accentuated by the ephemeral quality of the imagery in which she finds her inspiration. <!--EndFragment-->
