Peg
VAI learned garment sewing from my grandmother. I stayed over night on a Friday as a 7th grader, and we got up Saturday morning and made a jumper out of an uneven plaid. And it matched. Everywhere. She ruined me for buying plaids off the rack because I always check the seams and they never match. :-) She actually saved my life one day while I was there sewing Barbie doll clothes with her. We were at the table in the dining room, and I had a thimble on my finger. I took it off by using my teeth, and my sister said something to me, and when I breathed in to reply, the thimble went down my throat, and I couldn't breathe. At all. I ran to the living room where my grandma was, and pointed to my throat, my sister screaming in the background. Slick as anything, grandma put her hand in my mouth, caught the thimble between her index and middle finger, and pulled it out. When I hugged her, crying from the shock of it all, practical grandma hugged me back and said: "You're okay. Stop crying and go finish your sewing." From there, it was a natural progression to quilting, but not until 1985. I wish she were here to see the fabric monster she created. My first wall quilt was a HUGE 4 block Snail's Trail that actually won 3rd place at a show in WV. No one was more surprised than me. I find inspiration in so many artists' work. The internet is a wonderful place to see fabric expanded to the limits of potential. It's all art and it's all beautiful. We are getting ready to move to the east coast of Virginia on the bank of the Potomac River. In a sanctuary that will nurture my focus on art as a living, I can't wait for my husband and I to be able to enjoy a slowed down life in a home that demands that we watch flowing water and spend time wandering around the area.

Nancy Martini over 2 yearsThanks... I think you just need to start. Do the first thing that comes to mind without thinking too hard. You have a lot of pages to fill and the fun part about a sketchbook is that it is all experimental. My favorite part of the sketchbook is that I have no clients to please or to change the design on me. Most of the work I do starts out great, then the client has to get excited and creative. Once they add to or change the piece, its never as good as the initial design. So have fun... let me know when you post something. |

Nancy Martini over 2 yearsLove your dancing trees... beautiful. I share your love for sewing, but find it hard to find the time. Currently working on a red and white hand-stitched scrap quilt, a labor of love. |
