My Experience
After receiving a scholarship to attend the Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio, I was awarded a BFA in Painting and Art Therapy in 1996. Since then I have had many commissions and solo exhibitions in the US. While serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Lesotho, Southern Africa , I created a sixty foot mural permanently displayed at a major tourist center. Upon return to the states, I worked at the Bruce Museum of Arts and Science in Greenwich, CT, to develop and execute outreach programs for local schools. I completed my Master's degree in Education and Human Development at George Washington University in 2004 as part of the DC Teaching Fellows program while working as a special education teacher in the DC Public Schools system.
In 2004, I returned to the Bruce Museum of Arts and Science to create educational programs for special needs and senior audiences. One program I developed that received great attention is called "A Lifetime of Looking" which is a visual literacy program devoted to individuals with Alzheimer's disease. I left the Bruce in late 2005, taking on a better opportunity as the Museum Educator for School and Family Programs at The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. At the Phillips, I developed school tours and family workshops, as well as managed a corps of docents. After spending three years in arts-integrated classrooms as a special education teacher/ coordinator, I left the field for an arts programming position wth Arlington County government. In 2007, I started an organization called Art/Engage LLC. We work in group homes in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Outside of work, I paint commissions upon request.
